Sheffield United retain interest in World Cup-bound £11m man as Everton transfer door opens amid Rangers link. Scotland’s World Cup-bound defender Nathan Patterson remains a player of interest to Sheffield United, The Star has been told, as he prepares for a key summer in his future at both club level and country. Patterson joined Everton in 2022, for a fee said to be in the region of £11m. A serious injury in 2024 derailed his career somewhat and he has since been on the fringes at Everton, making just eight senior appearances last season. We understand that United at least strongly considered an approach for the former Rangers man in January before they brought in Ki-Jana Hoever from Wolves. The feeling inside Bramall Lane is that Hoever didn’t push Femi Seriki hard enough for his place, with right-back one of the priority positions this summer for boss Chris Wilder and his recruitment staff. Former Blade Kyle Walker remains another player of interest amid uncertainty over his future at Burnley following their relegation back to the Championship, and his long-stated desire to return to his boyhood club before calling time on his illustrious playing career. But, as we revealed earlier this week, the former England international is effectively pricing himself out of a fairytale return to Bramall Lane, which is simply not possible unless he takes a substantial paycut on his eye-watering wages at Turf Moor. If that happens United would still be interested in bringing him home but are sensibly looking elsewhere as well - with Patterson remaining on United’s list of potential targets. The expectation is that he is one of a few fringe players that could leave this summer, with Bologna the latest club to be linked. David Moyes’ side are in the market for a new right-back, with Arsenal’s Premier League-winning Ben White one audacious target and Aaron Wan-Bissaka another option following West Ham United’s relegation to the Championship. If United followed up their initial interest in Patterson with a concrete bid, then one potential complication could be any interest from his former club Rangers. United are also understood to have had a look at Aston Villa’s Spanish right-back Andreas Garcia previously as they seek competition for rising star Seriki. “Nathan Patterson is at the age where you have to be playing football,” former Scotland striker Paul Dickov said recently. “He’s had some unfortunate injuries but now that he’s back, he needs game time. There’s no doubting his ability; he’s a top young defender, and a move back to Rangers would be good for him. If he’s available, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of clubs interested in him. But I think a move back to Rangers, where he’s comfortable and in surroundings he knows, could reignite his career.
